Entry-Level Unix Systems Administrator
PARSEC Group is seeking a local (this position is *not* a remote position) Linux or BSD-centric technical consultant that we will train on traditional and classic old-school Unix platforms where skill gaps exist. This position will be at our corporate headquarters near the foothills in beautiful Arvada, Colorado.
Position Description
The Unix Systems Administrator will be joining a team of world-renowned US-based technical experts. Our small team provides support to a variety of Linux & Unix variants. In this role, the Unix Systems Administrator will be enabled to troubleshoot issues & provide technical direction to our customer base, which encompasses Fortune 500 corporations & Federal Agencies, in order to solve mission-critical challenges alongside other PARSEC software experts. PARSEC Group’s customer base includes a variety of industries, including (but not limited to) Manufacturing, Transportation, Healthcare, Electrical & Nuclear Power, Oil & Chemical, High Tech, Research & Scientific, as well as Public & Private Utilities.
For this position, we’re willing to train the right person. Who is the “right person”, you ask? We’re glad you asked! You may be what we’re looking for if you’re someone who:
- Loves the Unix Philosophy and are genuinely interested in this amazing family of operating systems.
- Can quickly adapt and learn new and old Unix variants. We support Linux, BSD, AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Tru64, and IRIX. What you do not know we will train you on!
- Shows interest in and has at least some knowledge of storage, networking, and scripting. These are related to being a Unix guru. Even if you don't know much now, you need to be genuinely interested. We are. So, we'll see it in you, too.
- Do not have a problem with a lot of training in the first 3-6 months. You may be in a classroom or working side by side with our existing consultants all day long. You will be on site in our classrooms, not remote. When Unix support calls come in you will ride shotgun.
- Has spent actual time on their own time using and learning Linux or BSD (or other Unix!) and can prove it via technical discussion of what they did. A candidate with a "home lab" is always a positive. If your significant other is angry you have too much Unix gear, you're in the right place.
- Would rather use a command line interface than fuss over UX/UI elements and push buttons. You want your skills to have coherency and amplify each other, not just learning certification check-boxes.
- Can show up on time and communicate when & why if they can't. Be able to communicate effectively and independently manage your time.
Due to the specific training and job requirements of this position, you may not be a good fit for this position if:
- You’re mainly looking for web-based programming or content development opportunities. We do very little of this. It doesn't contribute to our consultant's value much. Knowing LVM is great, but knowing J2EE tech or Django isn't going to be much value at PARSEC. If your heart belongs to the web, it'd be a bad fit. We want someone who's heart belongs to the command line!
- Your main interest is in virtualization and containerization. We *do* work with these technologies, but we find that folks who love them, typically have weak command line skills and a poor understanding of the OS features and existing facilities. We want to hire or mint operating system experts, not folks who are interested in chasing the latest shiny object. If you think everything ought to be in Kubernetes…
- You think it's okay for a Linux/Unix sysadmin to be running Windows on his desktop. It's natural right? Not so; not here. You'll be expected to walk the walk with a real Unix-based workstation. Want to use Tru64 on the desktop? No problem! Want to run the latest FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD or Linux variant? No problem! You want to run Windows? No thanks.
Once your initial training is complete and the real fun begins, the duties and responsibilities of the Unix Systems Administrator include, but are not limited to:
- Answer technical support questions about Linux.
- We sometimes do work directly on client systems using a consulting arrangement, which is mostly done remotely but occasionally may be on-site.
- Developing and presenting fun and engaging mini-presentations [technical webinars that make you shine] for our clients’ system administrators approximately every two-three months.
- Performing remote system monitoring for select clients to ensure maximum uptime for their mission-critical environments.
- Provision and support lab hardware and software resources to support client-environment simulation. Lab resources are much like client resources with the same operating systems in play. Our lab is a playground of classic Unix & Linux gear.
- Work with PARSEC’s Account Management team to assist in providing project planning & technical direction to prospective & existing customers, as needed.
- Help identify other potential opportunities to further provide additional support to our clients; engage Sales - have fun brainstorming [dazzle Sales with your brilliance] a quotable solution that meets the needs of what was uncovered.
- Accurately documenting activities and time spent in PARSEC's activity tracking system.
- Participate in light-duty low-frequency on-call support rotation.
Benefits of Working for The PARSEC Group
- Competitive salary with health, vision, and retirement benefits and generous PTO policy.
- Two (2) work from home days after (and *only*after) you complete 200-level classes on the operating systems we support, and are able to effectively do your job from home. We have the instructor and class materials in-house.
- Large Unix lab to learn and experiment in.
- Smallcompany.Very few corporate meetings (we have 2-3 per *year*).
- Bring your own hardware into the shop if you want. We do not force workstation images on you. When you start working from home, it's OpenVPN or Wireguard only (and we don't restrict your inbound traffic).
- You'll work with seasoned pros in Unix and OpenVMS and the opportunity to learn is tremendous! The problems we face are diverse and interesting.
- All Unix & Linux, all day!
