Multi-Platform Integration

In today's environment, nearly every computing center is made up of multiple operating systems running on hardware from multiple vendors. This allows companies to take advantage of the best features of each environment. This also means that there can be more issues trying to maintain those environments and make them work together.

PARSEC Group can help you integrate your varying systems so that they work in concert with each other. By doing this, you may simplify user maintenance, increase application compatibility, gain efficiency in storage, and require fewer printers.

File Sharing

The Network File System (NFS) is available on most major operating systems. This uses TCP/IP to communicate between the systems to provide access to files that are on remote systems as though they reside on the local system. PARSEC Group can configure NFS, Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) and user mapping on your systems to share files with other systems running the same or different operating systems including OpenVMS, UNIX, Linux (Red Hat and SUSE) and Microsoft Windows. This way, users and applications may access the remote files without having to use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to copy from a remote host, do their work, and FTP them back to the remote system. This decreases storage requirements and increases the users productivity.

The Common Internet File System (CIFS), also known as Samba, provides systems the ability to work in cooperation with Microsoft Windows using the Server Message Block (SMB), SMB/CIFS protocol. PARSEC Group can install, configure and update Samba/CIFS on your OpenVMS, UNIX and Linux (Red Hat and SUSE) operating systems. With this, your systems can provide its data to Microsoft Windows systems, or other systems running the CIFS or Samba software.

Authentication

OpenVMS V8.2 and later support OpenVMS logins being authenticated by Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) or Active Directory. With this, your users have a single password to remember for their Microsoft Windows domain and their OpenVMS accounts. When it is time to change their password, it only needs to be changed once for the domain. A similar process can be performed on almost all Unix variants as well. This can simplify the day-to-day management of user accounts and free up time for the system administrators to handle other tasks.

Printer Sharing

Multiple systems, even those running different operating systems, may share the same printers. These systems may use the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) protocol for compatibility with UNIX environments or they may use Samba or CIFS to share printers with Microsoft Windows and compatible printers. PARSEC Group can configure your printers for maximum utilization by all of your enterprise systems.

Networking

TCP/IP is a standard networking protocol available on all major operating systems. DECnet is a robust network available for OpenVMS, Tru64 UNIX, Linux (Red Hat and SUSE) platforms and Microsoft Windows. Let us help you complete your integration of the systems in your network by installing and configuring these networks based on your application needs.
